journal #4

When someone does not use my name, gives me the cold shoulder, doesn't make eye contact and only greets me with complaints. First impression is that they are angry with you about something. I would feel like i did something wrong. To me when someone just starts talking to you without saying you're name or even a good morning or good afternoon, that immediately lets me know they are mad and they have a quick need to be heard. Means that something has been on their mind for a long time and they wanna share it. My first instinct would possibly get angry at the way they are approaching me. Another feeling would be defense, obviously anyone would try to go on the defensive side if they felt like they were being attacked. When someone gives me the cold shoulder it makes me feel like they are so angry with me that they don't even wanna be bothered with me. obviously i would feel horrible and try to make it right, but i also feel the silent treatment is usually a calm before the storm. It will eventually lead up to something bigger. When a person doesn't make eye contact and only is complaining i would of course again feel bad and try to fix the situation. i think when dealing with a complaint the best thing to do is listen first and then react. Even though i would be feeling like i wanna cut the person off to defend myself or my staff.

  1. Good thoughts. I added this question because in my years of working with children, parents and staff, I have seen staff members treat parents and other staff in this disrespectful manner. I want my students to realize how important and powerful giving respectful eye contact can be.Thanks for your thoughtful response.
